Most people don’t know the sign was originally constructed in 1923 as a publicity gimmick to help generate sales for a real estate development called HOLLYWOODLAND. The workers erecting the large sheets of metal on the slopes of Mount Lee could not possibly have known they were creating a future legacy for the soon to be ultra-famous town.

The sign became a novelty for the town residents from the very beginning and taking photos with the sign was a popular activity. The “HOLLYWOODLAND” real estate development eventually sold out, but by that time the sign had become a beloved part of the landscape and went on to become a timeless and universal symbol of so many hopes & dreams.
